Design Guidance - Joint Types - T-Joint

As with all joints, the application of tensile stress on the adhesive will lead to poor performance. It is therefore important to protect against these stresses through careful design. The examples below (re-drawn from Adams RD and Wake WC, Structural Adhesive Joints in Engineering, 1984) show how this can be achieved. Compressive loading will not affect the joint unless bucking of the vertical member occurs.
