Examples of the scarf joint are shown below. This design eliminates the asymmetry of the lap joints and removes the associated peel stresses, when loaded. However, the available bond area is highly dependent on the thickness of the adherends, making this method of bonding impractical for the joining of thin metal sheet. Thicker panels, especially mouldable panels of polymer composites, can benefit from this type of joint.
