Report 1: Key Surface Qualities

This report is aimed both at newcomers to adhesive bonding as well as technologists with greater experience. Seven key qualities required of a surface for the formation of adequate bonds are defined and discussed:

  • Wettability
  • Roughness
  • Soundness
  • Stability
  • Contamination-free
  • Uniformity
  • Adhesive compatibility.

The purpose of the report is to identify these qualities with a view to their measurement as part of the adhesive bonding process in a production environment. The effect of variations in these qualities on the performance of bonded joints is discussed briefly in this report and more extensively in Report 2.
