Report 4, Annex 2. Tensile Impact Testing of Adhesively Bonded Thin Lap Shear Joints

This report gives the results from tests performed on bonded mild steel lap shear joints. The adhesives used were a one-part rubber toughened epoxy adhesive, AV119 (Araldite 2007) from Ciba (now Vantico) and a two-part acrylic adhesive, F241 from Permabond. The dimensions of the joint such as overlap length, bond thickness, adherend thickness and presence of an adhesive fillet were varied. Overlap lengths were 6.25, 12.5 and 25mm; bond thicknesses were 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1mm; adherend thicknesses were 1, 1.5 and 2mm. The joints were tested at a rates of 0.3, 2 and 8m/s. The results presented include the peak force, the duration of the test and the energy. Traces of either force or stress against time are also presented. High speed film was taken of a few test and this is presented, along with results from the fractography of failed samples.
