Report 1. The Preparation of Bulk Adhesive Samples for Mechanical Testing

This report presents a review of methods that have been developed to prepare samples of adhesive material of up to 4mm thickness. Thicker samples of up to 13mm thickness can be prepared for some adhesives but problems can occur. Four adhesives were investigated: a one-part rubber toughened epoxy, AV119 (Araldite 2007) from Ciba (now Vantico); a two-part epoxy, TE251 from Evode; a two-part polyurethane, Scotchweld 3532 from 3M: a two-part toughened acrylic, F241 from Permabond. Recommendations are made for bulk specimen preparation.
