M10 Peel Testing

Introduction

The shear strength of adhesive bonds is an important factor in their longevity.  A common method used in forensic analysis to assess bond quality is peel testing

Purpose

To assess bond strength of adhesive joints

Method

The two adherents are pulled apart in a controlled manner and relevant loading and strain parameters recorded. An important parameter is the peel strength usually given in N/mm Once separated the two surfaces may be subject to other forensic analysis including visual examination, XPS or SEM to ascertain whether the failure has occurred in the adhesive, at an interface or in one of the adherent materials.

Example

An example of the application of peel testing was the forensic analysis of shoe adhesion, reported in the following case study:

E11 Long Term performance in footwear
